DETAIL Project of the Month — December 2008

The New Royal Theatre in Copenhagen occupies a prominent position on the harbour. The tall brick face of the auditorium is a direct reference to the old warehouses in the area, while the glazed level for artists — with its storey-height steel load-bearing structure — forms a distinct element that cantilevers out over the water.

Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is administered as an unincorporated territory of the US, and in view of its important strategic position, it has been a naval and air-force base since 1949. It is scarcely surprising, therefore, that a luxury label has built one of its flagship stores on the island, in close proximity to other noble boutiques, top restaurants and hotels.

This brand new ice rink is located on a regional sports-centre and college complex in St. Pölten, just outside Vienna. Its upswept lines harmonize well with the surrounding facilities, finishing on the north side with a distinctive flourish. Enclosed within the shiny, smooth aluminium skin is a competition-standard ice rink for skating (general public, schools), ice-hockey and ice dancing, and training facilities.

At more than 3 km long, the new Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport is one of the world’s largest buildings. It will accommodate fifty million passengers per year by 2020. Despite the vast scale, the clearly organised symmetrical floor plan helps passengers orientate themselves. The building fans out at either end to accommodate large halls: located in the south is Terminal T3A for national flights; in the north, T3B for international destinations.

The Changing Landscape of Construction

In the 25+ years that I have been observing the Construction Industry I have noted a lot of changes. Looking back further, say 150 years, the changes appear even more dramatic.

In the past, the building in the central Portuguese university city Coimbra which presently houses this centre for visual art has had a host of different uses. Although built in the sixteenth century in the heart of the historic centre to house the “Colégio das Artes”, for years it accommodated a courthouse and a correctional facility.

DETAIL Project of the Month — July 2008

The new trade-fair hall north of Paris constitutes the first phase of a 300,000 m2 expansion. Since such spaces are only in use periodically, this new building is designed to host a variety of other events and to adhere to high environmental standards. Thus, the higher, free-span wing of the bi-partite hall can be transformed as needed; for example, an auditorium structure accommodating an audience of eight hundred to two thousand can be set up within it.

The big visual attraction of Marmoutier in Alsace is a monastery dating from the 5th century. The wall surrounding the former gardens, in which the new nursery school has been built, is a protected historic monument. Conditions were therefore imposed.

The clear white cubic forms of this day-care centre stand in an open landscape between the mountains of Sintra and the sea. A whole new settlement will be developed here in the near future. The present building is flanked by two open spaces of quite different character. The quiet, enclosed courtyard with a cork oak and a shallow pool of water enjoys a view of the mountains to the north.

Building Information Modeling Moves into AEC Mainstream, Adding Value to Project Delivery Process

The architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry is on the cusp of revolutionary change. Two-dimensional, paper based project information is giving way to 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools and virtual design and construction (VDC) processes that support lean construction methods.
