An Integrated What-If Engine

One of the things that makes building information modeling so much more than just 3D is the connection to a database. Mining the data can help us to study the impact of project decisions in a more predictive way than gut feel and experience alone. Better informed early decisions lead to less downstream changes and therefore less change orders, value engineering, and rework on the part of architects, engineers, and builders alike.

Why BIM?

I was speaking at a meeting several weeks ago and someone asked me about my beliefs on BIM. They were wondering why I thought BIM was here to stay. That question kind of caught me off guard; so it made me start thinking about why I believe what I do about the future of the AEC Industry.

Cost Estimators Winning Work With BIM

Project awards are the lifeblood of a company’s survivability, particularly in times of economic recession.  Veteran members of architecture and construction firms strive to cultivate trust and the kind of relationships with their clients that usurps competition and all but guarantees the next business opportunity.  However, with issues such as the economy, shareholder satisfaction, and the fear of losing the “competitive edge” a relationship built on trust and repetitive successes can still easily fall prey to the hunt.  In this industry it is common that project awards are made based on a combination of factors, where relationships carry only a portion of weight.

SmartBIM Object Modeling Guidelines for Revit

Revit is an “object oriented” software application.  During the CAD era we constantly talked about the future with “object oriented” software, a time when the objects be intelligent - graphically correct with product specific data associated.

Interference Check and BIM

As an Architect or Engineer, how often have you been frustrated by phrases such as, “Why are you only using half of that electrical room?” or “I don’t have enough room for my equipment to fit!” during project coordination meetings?  With BIM technology, coordination takes a more optimistic and collaborative approach; thus minimizing frustrations and maximizing meeting productivity.

Owners and SmartBIM Objects – What You Need To Do

If you look at a typical building (fast food, grocery stores, hospitals, retail stores, hospitality), there are thousands of individual components and products.  As an owner, efficiently managing these extensive lists of products is a challenge.  We have had discussions with owners and the number of individual products range from 5,000 to 10,000.  The range of complexity is wide, from simple bollards to complex pieces of equipment with electrical and plumbing connections.  One solution for owners is the adoption of BIM modeling for more standardized design, product selection and maintenance.  When considering the individual product range of 10,000 objects, it may seem overwhelming, however it is very likely that many of the objects can be modeled parametrically so one SmartBIM Object may represent several products.

BIM Coordination and Collaboration

With the demand for Building information Modeling (BIM) escalating, it is paramount that design and construction professionals become accustomed to doing things differently within the AEC industry.  The total team concept that BIM brings to the table, will not only compel us to change the way we approach a project, it will also transform the way that we design a project.
