DETAIL Project of the Month — May 2009After the Empire State Building, the nearly completed Bank of America Tower is the second-highest skyscraper in New York. Located close to Times Square, the building is the outcome of many years of collaboration between two powerful instances with common interests. As early as the 1990s, the Bank of America had expressed the wish to create a new iconographic headquarters building in New York. Not only should it manifest its presence visually in Midtown Manhattan; the bank wished to secure the loyalty of members of the staff through the creation of first-class working conditions. May

DETAIL Project of the Month — April 2009In the Swiss canton Fribourg, two villages were recently consolidated in order to simplify the bureaucratic infrastructure. The burgeoning municipality was in need of a new community centre. The new design has contexturality in mind: The architects avoided creating a building which would be out of place and instead fostered the town’s traditions with respect to form and materiality. Mar

DETAIL Project of the Month — March 2009In late 2006 the firm form, art — a recently established, Graz-based enterprise — was commissioned to develop a canopy to cover the so-called “Linienparkplatz 1” in front of the main entrance to the Linz airport. The lightweight steel-and-membrane construction completed in 2008 shelters 130 parking spaces. In case a parking garage is eventually built, it can be disassembled quickly and set up again on another site. Feb

DETAIL Project of the Month — February 2009The roof of this pavilion serves first and foremost as public footpath. A series of ramps links the river level to the historic centre of this northern Portuguese city and invites pedestrians to stop and enjoy the stunning view of the surroundings. That this artificial landscape, which was furnished with a continuous, fine-grained coating, is also the enclosing surface of a building almost seems to be an afterthought. Jan

DETAIL Project of the Month — January 2009The industrial port city Marseille has been working for decades to improve its municipal coastline. Back in the 1970s, the Prado beaches were created through landfill measures. The four first-aid posts, which have just been completed, are intended to provide the public beaches with a sense of safety and, at the same time, of identity. The pavilions are each situated centrally on the respective segment of the beach, and emergency vehicles can drive right up to them. Dec

DETAIL Project of the Month — December 2008The New Royal Theatre in Copenhagen occupies a prominent position on the harbour. The tall brick face of the auditorium is a direct reference to the old warehouses in the area, while the glazed level for artists — with its storey-height steel load-bearing structure — forms a distinct element that cantilevers out over the water. |
