Foundation Coatings

Coatings used on structure foundations can generally be categorized two ways, dampproof and waterproof. Damproofing is defined in Means Illustrated Construction Dictionary as a water-resisting treatment or material applied to the surface of a concrete or masonry wall to prevent passage or absorption of water or moisture. Waterproofing, on the other hand, is defined as any number of materials applied to various surfaces, e.g., a building foundation, to prevent the infiltration of water.

The recession arrived late in the hotel market and is still deepening although the recession is ebbing in the overall economy. Smith Travel Research reports that April occupancy and room rates dropped about 10% from a last April which is almost a 20% dip in revenue per available room, a standard measure of hotel operating results, reports Reed Construction Data chief economist Jim Haughey.

The U.S. economy appears poised for recovery and Canada’s economy is in a holding pattern, which is better than the free fall of earlier this year. The good-news indicators are tentative and fragile, but they are encouraging nonetheless. In the U.S., there are two key measures that look at how consumers are feeling and what is happening in manufacturing. Yardsticks for both have been climbing of late. In Canada, jobless benefit claims have fallen and commodity price increases point to more capital spending.

Today’s buildings are significantly more technologically advanced than those of a decade ago. Enhanced energy efficiency, security, fire protection and building automation requirements are resulting in very complex buildings. The above systems must perform their individual function but also must sequentially interact with each other.
