Walk the Walk: Architects Leading the Sustainable Evolution. What better way to live this theme than by achieving LEED Gold Certification for your very own office! Architectural & Engineering Resources for Construction, PLLC (AERC), located in Hernando, Mississippi was founded by Doug Thornton, AIA LEED AP, in April of 2002. Joined by partner David Hale, PE, and later Mary Ayers, ASID, NCIDQ, LEED AP, and Patrick Smith, the firm undertook the process of LEED certification in a retrofit for their new office. Proving the viability of green, the project helped them to learn the walk, so they could walk the walk. The project provided practical lessons for understanding the comprehensive financial and market impacts, design requirements, and construction implications related to sustainable design.
The firm moved to occupy their new facility in May of 2008, receiving LEED Gold Certification in March of 2009. Gold certification recognized performance in five key areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
AERC now promotes the benefits of sustainability, designing multiple project types including churches, collegiate buildings, dormitories, offices, industrial buildings, schools and banks. Having learned and walked the walk themselves, AERC now effectively talks the walk with clients, with a reputation for their expertise and thorough understanding of project delivery methods in service to their clients.
