SmartBIM Library 2.0 Release Notes

This document contains important information for the Reed Construction Data SmartBIM Library™. Please read the entire document before installing the SmartBIM Library.

Overview

The BIM team at Reed Construction Data is dedicated to support you and our goal is to ensure a product with a high level of quality. A summary of the new features contained in the SmartBIM Library 2.0 version can be found in the What’s New? section.

We recommend you review the Installation Instructions and the Known Issues section (listed below) before installing this SmartBIM Library.

Installation Instructions

  1. Verify you have the following software applications installed on your machine. They are required to install the SmartBIM Library.
    • Java JRE 1.6.0 or higher. See the Java website for more information.
    • Autodesk® Design Review Viewer 2008 or 2009.
    • Autodesk® Revit® Architecture 2008 or 2009, U.S. English — Use for the Family Content Publisher.
    • Microsoft® .Net Framework Version 2.0 — Use for the Family Content Publisher.

For more information on system requirements, see System Requirements for SmartBIM Library.

  2. Download the SmartBIM Library installer from the download site and save it to a directory on your computer.
  3. Double-click on the installer and follow the installation instructions.

What’s New?

  1. Find Family or Type — The new Find feature allows you to locate Revit Families or Types in the Library pane and Find family or type, grid display pane.
  2. Redesigned Revit parameters pane - This feature displays Revit Family Type parameters and values in a grid format. You can select Revit Family Types to display and move grid columns to compare Type parameter values side-by-side.
  3. The memory footprint of content in the SmartBIM Library is reduced by an order of magnitude.
  4. The Family Content Publisher (FCP) and SmartBIM Open Library process has been simplified.
  5. 3D DWF display is faster and DWF models zoom extents on double-click.
  6. Quick Cost Estimator - The SmartBIM™ Quick Cost Estimator (QCE) powered by RSMeans enables you to quickly calculate an estimated value of total project cost localized to your selected area. You can select from more than 50 building types in 930 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The calculations include add-on costs itemizing low, medium, and high estimates for Architectural Fees & Contractor's Overhead & Profit.

Note: For this release, the Quick Cost Estimator does not extract project information from the Revit application.

Known Issues

The following items are known issues for the software installer, SmartBIM Library, and Family Content Publisher.

SmartBIM Library Installer

  • SmartBIM Library supports Revit Architecture 2008 and Revit Architecture 2009. However, if you install one or the other version of Revit after installing the SmartBIM Library, it is necessary to re-install the SmartBIM Library to configure the Family Content Publisher Revit add-in.

SmartBIM Library (SBL)

  • SBL functions with Autodesk Design Review (ADR) 2008 and 2009.
  • Revit Curtain Panel component families do not display in the SmartBIM Library due to Revit API limitations.
  • Type Catalog selection on Family drag-n-drop from SBL into Revit - Some families in the SBL generic library have Types defined in a Type Catalog file. On drag-n-drop from SBL, types defined in the Type catalog are not presently presented due to limitations of the Revit API. The work around: once the family is loaded in Revit, select it from the Revit Project Browser tree, right-click, and select the Reload command. This action invokes the Revit Load component command that displays a Type table and allows the user to select one or more Types to load.

Family Content Publisher (FCP)

The issues that follow summarize limitations or constraints of working with the Revit API.

  • FCP processing speed is constrained by Revit performance and the Revit API. Processing families with a large type catalog can range from a few minutes to an hour or more. We recommend running FCP on a dedicated device.
  • The Revit API does not support extraction of Category data from Profile families. FCP presently assigns Profile families to a SmartBIM Library category called ’Unknown’.
  • The Revit API does not support extraction of category information from Curtain Panel component families. FCP does not presently extract family data for Curtain Panel component families.
  • In situations where FCP processes a hosted family and a non-hosted family with the same name exists in the project, Revit displays a message that interrupts FCP processing. FCP processing will continue if you press OK or exit the warning message.
