Why Use Project Management?

There is some feeling in the construction industry that an overall strategy for project management and control is not really necessary — that one can monitor the job effectively enough by walking around the site to ensure on-time completion and a profit. In reality, the current state of the construction industry is such that more effective techniques for control and management on the job are essential.

I recently was invited to speak as a part of a “Putting BIM into Practice” panel in Florida, which was hosted by Building Design and Construction Magazine. In speaking to some of the guests in attendance, many of them were interested in my background and wanted to know how much experience I had in the industry. Looking back, I realized these guests were trying to get a good feel for my credibility, since I was going to be sharing my knowledge of BIM with them.

I have been selected to give a talk at the 2010 AIA Convention in Miami. This talk will be a revised version of a 2009 presentation: BIM 1.0, BIM 2.0, BIM 3.0. The 2009 presentation was generic in nature: 1. BIM programs that are available and 2. Industry process changes that will happen. For 2010 I would like to talk about what is actually happening with using BIM for Visualization, Drawings, Analysis and Simulation, however, I need your help in determining the most pertinent information for the AIA audience.

In Lucerne, on the way from the old part of town, the visitor first passes by the grand five-star hotels overlooking the shores of Lake Lucerne before reaching the Transportation Museum, Switzerland’s most important museum of technology, occupying an impressive position right by the banks of the lake.

Reinforcing or “beefing up” a building might be referred to as the “fortress solution.” A collateral approach might be to protect a building’s structural system as well as its vital vertical systems for fatal damage, while at the same time permitting violent impacts or explosions to expend themselves on more absorbent flexible materials.

How SMART is BIM?

There seems to be so many different definitions for BIM. It is really hard to say which one is correct, but I personally like this one. Building Information Modeling is a process of generating and managing a building’s information through three-dimensional design. It is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility.

On September 23, 2009, Reed Construction Data presented a Webcast titled: Lessons in BIM Adoption. After the panel presentations, viewers were given the opportunity of asking questions. Several of the questions from the audience concerned my statement during the presentation, “architects and engineers need to share their BIM projects”.

In the 1970s the local authorities responsible for landscape planning placed a ban on felling the Douglas fir plantation in which this villa stands. For all future building development on the site, this had significant consequences in terms of eaves height and cubature.
