The original Mount Pleasant Academy was demolished and replaced with a new 65,000 square foot school which included 26 general classrooms, 5 special ed classrooms, 2 computer labs, art room, band and music labs, and a 3,000 square foot multi-purpose room joined to the cafeteria with an operable partition which will allow opening into one large space or dividing in to two separate spaces. The multi-purpose room also has a platform stage. Construction of the new school presented numerous challenges for the district and the design team. One challenge was that the site is located in a flood zone, thus requiring the new facility's first floor elevation to be raised above flood level to be in accordance with code. Another challenge was that this facility is located in a residential neighborhood and the design team was challenged to design a facility that blended in with the neighborhood. The biggest challenge for this project was due to the site being very narrow and long, which presented issues like providing adequate car and bus stacking and required parking spaces. However, through collaboration with the Town of Mt. Pleasant, these issues were overcome, allowing the facility to be replaced. The Town of Mt. Pleasant and Charleston County School District entered into a joint use agreement of the parking lot located in front of the baseball field, to be used by the school as well as the Town. Secondly, through cooperation with the Town and CCSD, an easement variance was obtained which allows proper bus and car stacking and turnaround space. Without this collaboration with the Town, it was unlikely this facility could have been replaced. The architectural team had a very challenging job to re-develop this existing site to accommodate the new facility and has done a very good job of not only re-developing this site but blending the design of this facility into a residential neighborhood where it is located.
