Project Description:

The new Orange Grove Charter Elementary School is located on the same site where the previous school existed. Demolition of the old school included asbestos removal, site demolition, site clearing, tree removal, tree protection, The new 85,000 square foot facility accommodates 725 pre-K through 5th grade students. It is predominantly a one-story facility with a two-story classroom wing. It has 35 teaching stations, as well as several resource rooms, art room, band and music labs. There is also a state-of-the-art Media Center located toward the front of the building. The facility has a large multi-purpose room joined to the cafeteria with an operable partition which will allow opening into one large space or divided into two separate spaces. The multi-purpose room also has a platform stage. The facility has been designed as a community friendly school with the Media Center, Cafeteria/Multi-Purpose Room located for accessibility for after hours activities without having to access classroom corridors. The new facility has two drop-off points. One for bus drop-off and one for car drop-off as well as increased parking from the previous school. This should relieve pressure from cars backing up onto the street at drop-off and pick-up times. The architect had a very challenging job to re-develop this existing site to accommodate the new facility and has done a very good job of re-developing the site and blending the design of this facility into the residential neighborhood where it is located.

Green & Sustainable Features:

The new facility was designed and constructed under the U.S. Green Building Council LEED program initiatives%3B however, CCSD did not seek certification due to the costs associated with certification.
