Founded in 1848, the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind was established as a state institution in 1857. Today, the school operates as a day school and a boarding school serving children and youth between the ages of 21/2 and 21 years old. A number of its buildings were erected during the first decade of its existence and as such, were in need of updating or replacing. This project included renovation of several campus buildings including Thackson Hall Health & Assessment Center, Robertson Hall an Smith Hall. Work included installing new HVAC, fire sprinkler systems, and light fixtures. Existing ceilings had to be modified for the installation of the new fire sprinkler systems. A new underground fire main water line was also installed to supply water to each building. Additionally, the campus had not been designed with the special needs of the multi-handicapped in mind, which presented numerous problems for both pedestrian and vehicular movement. Seamon Whiteside + Associates developed a new campus master plan for school that addressed major changes in vehicular circulation patterns to make the campus safer for pedestrians and improved the school bus pick-up/drop-off system. As the school’s student body are either sight- or hearing-impaired or have other physical challenges, this planning element was of particular importance. The plan also addresses new buildings, replacement of older buildings, and the addition of new facilities that will improve campus security.
