Product Description

HMC was founded in 1940 by Jay Dewey Harnish in Ontario, California. In 1960, Jack Causey and Mel Morgan joined Harnish to form Harnish, Morgan, and Causey. Jay Harnish retired in 1978, at which time the firm became known as HMC Architects. Today, the firm is one of the largest planning and design firms headquartered in California, with 10 offices located throughout California and Nevada. It boasts more than 450 professionals and 80 licensed architects. HMC offers a wealth of services, including architecture, design, master planning, and interior design. Throughout the firm’s history, HMC has established an unequaled reputation as an award-winning designer of education, healthcare, and government facilities for public and private clients.

HMC Architects is the third largest planning and design firm in California with offices located throughout California and Nevada. The firm employs a staff of more than 450 professionals and 80 licensed architects. We offer a wide range of services, including architecture, planning, and interior design. Additional services include full-service consultation for school facility development, labor compliance, sustainable design and consultation, and graphic design. For more than 65 years, HMC has established an unequaled reputation as an award-winning designer of educational, healthcare, and governmental facilities for private and public clients.

The process by which we collaborate with our clients to achieve their design is as important as the end result. The ability to listen well — without preconceptions — and communicate clearly are perhaps our most important tools. Within this framework, our design approach centers on three overlapping issues:

  • Intelligent use of the site
  • Creative resolution of the client’s program
  • Concern for the client&rsquos budget and schedule.
Intertwined with the resolution of these pragmatic issues is the less tangible yet equally important goal of producing an attractive project that reflects our client’s aspirations, and is a fitting public structure for the larger community. While good design is often associated merely with appearance, we strongly believe it is imperative that architecture innovate, synthesize, and reflect larger ideas and convey meaning to the user and society. We are also committed to the principle that buildings should be responsible contributions to the environment. At HMC, we are ultimately inspired by the conviction that architecture achieved through this process is humane and timeless.

Facility development is a complex process requiring a proactive, strategic approach. Successful planning maximizes project opportunities and minimizes surprises through strong leadership, management, technical expertise, and collaboration. HMC approaches planning and design through a participatory process. We use a variety of innovative tools to help our clients plan their projects — including “visioning” processes to define guiding principles; “concept cards” for programming and data recording; and “gaming” for instant analysis of alternative solutions — that allow for meaningful input and interaction.

HMC’s interior design professionals work together with clients and architects to ensure a synthesis of vision, function, and aesthetics. Together, this creative team focuses on every detail. We believe interior design extends a building’s architectural concepts through the combination of natural and artificial lighting, color, materials, and furnishings. Our collaborative effort results in functional and pleasant environments that enhance the experience of those who use them.
