You are cordially invited to the SmartBIM Community
SmartBIM — SmartBuilding — SmartWorld
Reed Construction Data wants to be your knowledge based community for communications and industry developments on BIM (Building Information Modeling). Our new educational SmartBIM E-Newsletter focuses on issues, concerns and successes related to BIM. Some of the sections include articles from industry experts, case studies on the adoption BIM, GREEN articles, tips and tools, etc.
In hopes to help bridge the communication gap between owners, architects, engineers, contractors and building product manufacturers, we are committed to provide you with the latest information on BIM. We will bring all of these exciting developments to your inbox each month.

Six construction markets still expanding despite recession
8/5/2008 - It is very unusual for a boom in manufacturing construction to occur during a recession. But this is an unusual recession. The domestic economy is ebbing but exports, especially manufactured goods, are still expanding rapidly to a world economy still growing just below the record pace achieved in 2006-07. The accompanying worldwide commodity price boom has spurred US commodity producers and processors to invest heavily to boost capacity. It has also spurred US heavy equipment manufacturers to expand capacity in order to meet export orders from foreign commodity producers.
Since last fall, the chemical/petroleum industry has raised construction spending for new facilities by 14%. Construction spending for transportation equipment industries facilities is up 23%, primarily for aircraft, train engines and freight cars and specialty trucks. The small fabricated metal industry has boosted construction spending more than threefold. All of this capacity building is to serve foreign markets.
Ahead, the manufacturing construction sector will quickly begin to shrink slowly. This turnabout will be driven by ebbing foreign economic growth, a pullback in the commodity price boom and the end of.....(read more)
Tips for Building Concrete Sidewalks
8/5/2008 - Concrete is the most logical choice of material for sidewalks, driveways, patios, steps, garage floors, basement floors, slabs-on-grade, and commercial and industrial floors, not to mention walls, columns and beams — whether cast-in-place or precast. Concrete used in flat work provides a surface that is durable and easy to maintain, and that can be.....(read more)
U.S. Housing Indicators Move a Long Way In the Right Direction for Recovery
8/5/2008 - About the best thing, and it is not a small matter, that can be said for the U.S. housing market is that many of the key indicators have moved a long way in the right direction to where recovery can begin. Yes, there are still problems in financial markets. The banks are writing off their assets at an astonishing rate, with perhaps more.....(read more)

Reflective Coatings
Research by energy service companies, product manufacturers, and organizations such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNI) are demonstrating the potential of reflective roofing to conserve energy, mitigate urban heat islands, and improve air quality. Development in areas such as the U.S. Sunbelt has resulted in increased temperature and smog, as green areas and shade trees have been replaced with dark paving and roofs. Black roofs (such as EPDM, asphalt, and modified bitumen) have been shown to have a 6% reflectivity and temperatures 75o-100o hotter than the ambient temperature, while white, reflective roof membranes can reflect 80% of the heat, with roof temperatures on 15o-25o warmer than the ambient temperature.
Cooler reflecting roofs not only release less heat into the environment, but have a major effect on the building’s interior temperature, thereby reducing cooling costs by as much as 30%. The next yearly impact depends on the building’s particular location. (In extreme northern conditions, lower reflectivity may be preferred, as heat gain may be required for other reasons, including snow melting.) In addition to saving energy by reducing solar heat gain, cooler roofing materials can increase the longevity of the roof system itself.
A variety of coatings and materials can provide light colors and reflectivity. Like all products, selection of these systems should include evaluation of demonstrated life cycle and maintenance costs and a good warranty, supported by a reliable manufacturer. The ENERGY STAR® program has established specifications for roofing products, including a solar reflectance of at least 65% for low-slope and steep-slope use, and 81% for low-slope only, when the product is initially installed. (For more information, go to www.energystar.gov.) It should be noted that durability and maintenance influence reflectance, as the percentage can be reduced by surface weathering and dirt accumulation.
Appearance may be a factor in selection of reflective roofing, particularly in residential applications where sloped roofs are more visible than the low-slope roofs more common on commercial buildings. Houses may also have attics to help reduce the effect of heat gain on air-cooling requirements.
