I wanted to throw this question/discussion point out there to you contactors:

In these lean economic times, how does your approach to advertising and marketing your business change? Or does it change at all?

I know all of the conventional wisdom regarding what marketing experts recommend during a recession, but I am really interested in some real life stories if any one is willing to share.

Thanks,

Recently the weather has been crazy, raining one minute and dry the next. Unfortunately this can cause a job to run behind. Working outdoors always runs the risk of bad weather causing delays. This year has been especially worse. With ice pelts the size of golf balls coming down and snow falling during the spring season, it is not only farmers that are feeling the pressures of weather this year.

What effect has the weather had on your work?
How have you managed to work through the rain and ice pelts?

I am looking for some insight into current per square foot construction costs for a 5000 to 7000 sq. ft. contemporary style (steel, glass, stone roof) in Southern California. These are custom homes whose construction is more along the lines of a commercial building than the typical residential construction. I know that it is difficult to generalize, but if anyone can provide me with rough averages that would include interior finishes and landscaping I would appreciate it.

An article was recently written by Korky Koroluk in regards to robots being developed to work on and help with construction projects.

On one side, you have the idea that these newly developed robots (especially the ones that attach to the contractor) could help increase productivity and decrease the health hazards of working in construction. However, one must ask, won’t these backpacks start to get heavy, hurt the workers back in any way?

As well, you have the other “side of the coin.” They are already talking about developing a robot that can work on it’s own on the job site. Although this will bring down building costs, it will not help the workers in any way. Every time robots start being brought into the business, that means more people out of work.

What are your opinions on this topic? Are “construction robots” good for the industry? Bad for the industry? What benefits and downfalls do you forsee?

I periodically try to update my data base regarding labor production rates and pricing.

i am looking for feedback from contractors on how they estimate their pricing for metal stud framing.
Example -
Interior partitions - 3 5/8 20 gage partitions - Priced by the square foot or lineal foot based on the height? Is this price based on “your cost” or your “sell price”?

Curtainwall - 6” 18 gage - Priced by the square foot or lineal foot based on the height? Is this price based on “your cost” or your “sell price”?
