Impact of “Green” on Design

Posted by Donna Cahan

Now that environmental impact has become such a major movement within design, what is the best way to keep current on green products and installation methods?

Donna

At the moment information is so fragmented and while it seems that there is an abundant amount of information out there none have the breadth and depth of infomation that you have come to expect on the web these days.

A quick google search yields a plethora of info but your first stop should be http://www.usgbc.org. The USGBC has many resources and are the champions of LEED. Green building itself is growing but I believe that most get confused by LEED and it’s various certifications and requirements. You may have the best ‘green’ building out there but if it’s not LEED certified, it seems you may not get the pat on the back. DD

I agree with Derek regarding a Google search.  It is usually the best place to start for looking up any information. However, I must caution those using Google that there are a large amount of companies these days pretending to have green products.

The National Wood Flooring Association recently issued a press release on this topic.

Many manufacturers are calling their products green because they are made out of renewable resources. Here is a quote from the press release;

“It’s not a matter of simply whether raw materials can be replaced
quickly, but how those materials are used when making a finished product, and
what happens to them once their useful life is over.”

Keep this in mind when looking for new green products.
