Green—is it just a fad?

Posted by Bob Keaton

Green products? Green manufacturing? Green construction? Is it all just a fad? A hot topic that will go away in a few years like so many others? At least some are thinking so, but not so much in a negative way. It has been proposed that all the hoopla over sustainable construction will become a moot point because in five or 10 years we will have adopted the concept and be implementing it throughout. Nobody will need to push green, because it will have become ingrained in the system. We will have developed our green conscience.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to take off. It is cost effective, saves money and helps against global warming.

There are some signs that LEED is ailing. It is true that over time the building may yield lower overall utility costs but the price to actually build the structure may be prohibitive. Along with that, the beuracracy involved in the process may lead some to to become frustrated. Also, there have been claims that the benefits of Green building may be overblown, Greg Kats’ writes that “Many of the financial benefits estimated in this report are general financial benefits, rather than benefits that accrue to a specific building tenant or owner. While a government entity should care about the benefits its buildings may have for society, a private commercial entity may not. Private-sector building owners, for example, are less likely to care about health and environmental impacts, and hence might perceive significantly lower financial benefits.”
