how do you calculate cross bracing

Posted by michelesiewert

How do you calculate cross bracing in a roofing system? I am looking at cross bracing rods to reinforce structural framing 1" diameter 50' x 50' bay with joists every 5' OC.

I believe you want to brace open web metal joists.  If that is the case you would install a light angle 1” x 1” along the top of the bottom chord perpendiculat to the joists. I have never seen rods used although you could possibly use rods vs. angles.  To estimate just price the steel and a small amount of time to tack weld the angle or rod to the bottom chord.

No not what I was looking for.  I am taking this right from the costworks cd.  i am trying to individually cost out roofing systme b10201205900.  it says it has “cross bracing rods, to reinforce structural framing, 1” dia. shop fabricated, incl shop primer, fasteners.” I have found and figured out everything on the list except that.  It is calculated using a per pound quantity.  Using a standard weigh of 2.67 pounds per foot it does not work out.

The approx. calc is 5’ for 1” dia bar = 13.35 lbs.  The joist span is 30 to 50 feet, say 40’ span and the spacing is 5’ O.C. Therefore 5’ x 40’ = 200sq.ft. x .062 = 12.4 lbs.  We may have provided some overlap or waste.  This is pretty close 12.4 vs. 13.35.

Hope this helps....
