Abstract:
Contractors cut 49,000 jobs in October and September’s job count was revised down 50,000. More cuts are ahead, although smaller, for many months because the construction labor market has weakened substantially. However the ugly September-November period is an overestimate of the construction market weakness in 2009. The abruptness and unique nature of the credit freeze concentrated cutbacks in an unusually short period at the onset of this recession.
