ABC economist Anirban Basu attributes the rise in the infrastructure backlog to the initial impact of the construction stimulus program. The steep drop in heavy industrial backlogs is largely due to cutbacks in energy related projects.
Regionally, the steepest decline has been in the Northeast, closely followed by the South. Backlogs have held up better in both the West and Midwest.
The survey of ABC members shows smaller contractors with smaller backlogs than larger contractors and also experiencing a greater decline in their backlogs. $100 million plus scale contractors reported backlogs still near ten months. A few small contractors reported virtually no backlog at all.
The CBI index will be calculated again for June and then for every other month. The results will be reported on the website abc.org.
