New Brunswick

Aulac — New Brunswick Power has announced a $125 million Wind Farm project for Aulac, New Brunswick. Six thousand acres of land in the marsh area between Sackville and Amherst will become home to 43 turbines. Together, they will provide 177,870 megawatt hours of power per year or enough power to meet the electricity needs of 10,300 homes. The development is expected to be in full service by November 2009. — Shannon Ernst

Ontario

Cochrane — Guelph-based Canadian Hydro Developers Inc. is proceeding with a hydroelectric development at Island Falls. The project will generate an estimated 93,000 MWh per year of renewable electricity, which is enough to power about 13,000 households. Located near Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, the 20 MW run-of-river hydroelectric project consists of construction of an intake, powerhouse and substation. The project is co-owned by Canadian Hydro and two private developers. Currently, the owners are seeking regulatory approvals and financing. Stantec Consulting Ltd. of Guelph, ON is undertaking an environmental study. Detailed engineering design is expected to begin in spring 2008. The owners anticipate construction of the plant will begin in the summer months when all environmental approvals are in place. Commercial operation is expected to begin in spring 2009. — Chrissie O'Brien

Bowmanville — The Region of Durham will be hiring a consultant to complete designs for an expansion to the Port Darlington Wastewater Treatment Plant this spring. Located on Port Darlington Road in Bowmanville, the expansion of the plant is expected to double the capacity of the facility. The Region of Durham has stated they expect to issue a Request for Proposals for a design consultant this spring. No design or construction schedules have been identified for this project. The region expects to begin scheduling after securing the consultant. The project is estimated to cost approximately $34 million. — Samantha Vartiamaki

Alberta

Calgary - PCL Constructors Canada has begun construction on the $102 million renovation and addition to Southcentre Mall. The mall, co-owned and managed by Ivanhoe Cambridge, will see the addition of 35,000 square feet of retail space. Interior renovations commenced in 2007 and the entire project is expected to be completed by July 2010. — Jenniffer Hall

Edmonton — The City of Edmonton is seeking proposals from qualified and innovative development teams to design and develop a sustainable and affordable transit-oriented village. The plan includes approximately 1,000 housing units and main-floor commercial space on five multi-family parcels of City-owned land within the Station Pointe Redevelopment area. The parcels are located adjacent to the Belvedere Light Rapid Station. Proposals close on March 31, 2008. Construction-cost estimates have yet to be determined. — Jenniffer Hall

Red Deer — The City of Red Deer is undertaking the design and construction of a new 7800-square-metre RCMP detachment building on a three-acre site in downtown Red Deer. Stephens, Kozak Carr & Brown Architects are designing the project to LEED Silver standards. The estimated value of the project is approximately $24 million. It is expected to be tendered in May 2008. — Jenniffer Hall

British Columbia

Port Moody — A long-awaited four-lane overpass called the Murray-Clark Connector has been given $50 million in funding approval by British Columbia's TransLink board for design and construction. The overpass will connect Murray Street to Clark Street at Douglas Street and then onto Barnet Highway. The project also includes a new rail overpass to be located at the north end of Queens Street. The City of Port Moody has been lobbying for this project since 1983. The detailed engineering contract was awarded to Associated Engineering Ltd. of Burnaby. Construction is expected to start by the end of 2008, but there is no tender schedule determined at this time. — Sam Van Aert

North Saanich — The District of North Saanich is on the verge of receiving their long-awaited recreation centre upgrade. The $11 million Panorama Recreation Centre project will bring a new free-form swimming pool, two 25-metre lap lanes, a rehabilitation area, an expanded hot tub/whirlpool and a larger weight room. Architects for the project are Vic Davies Architects. The 26,000-square-foot project will be handled by Durwest Construction Management. The recreation centre is ready to start construction in March 2008 and completion is scheduled for spring 2009. — John Gracey

Sechelt — The sleepy town of Sechelt is gearing up for a massive new community. Art Phillips and Associates have applied to build a completely new neighborhood containing up to 600 condominium units, a golf course with clubhouse, 377 single-family lots, a hotel, a mixed-use town centre and apartment building. Art Phillips is acting on behalf of the owner who has not been disclosed at this time. Architects for the project are Downs Archambault Architects. The project is currently undergoing a lengthy rezoning process, with a decision from local authorities expected in early spring 2008. The general contractor has not been selected, but the construction cost is estimated at $145 million. — John Gracey

Coquitlam — Green development practices are coming to Coquitlam. The Townline Group has announced plans for a mixed-use community on 50 acres of land in Coquitlam that will incorporate a sustainability code. Townline's code promises that all hired professionals will be familiar with green-building practices. The proposed community will contain approximately 600 multi-family units within two towers and 600,000 square feet of commercial space. Townline is an owner/builder who manages the construction of their own projects. While no architects have been selected at this time, Downs Archambault Architects have been hired as site planners and sustainable development planners Holland Barrs have been retained as sustainability consultants. The project is going through a rezoning process and no construction schedule has been set at this time. The construction-cost estimate is $120 million. — John Gracey

Vancouver — Official master planning has begun on the Phase One expansion plans for the VanDusen Botanical Gardens. The proposed expansion plans include a 7,000-square-foot Garden Pavilion with a 450-seat hall and two classrooms for garden education; an addition onto the existing Floral Hall to accommodate 250 people; a Visitors Centre with two-storey roof lantern; enlarged gift shop; proposed timber-and-glass garden patio area; and a grand entrance and Water Gallery along Oak Street. Busby Perkins + Will Architects Ltd. of Vancouver with Cornelia Oberlander Landscape Architect are doing the design for the $20-million project. A formal development-permit application to the city is expected in spring 2008. There is no construction schedule determined at this time. — Sam Van Aert
