Metal Roof and Wall Panels

Metal roof and wall panels are not limited to industrial or commercial looking colors and profiles as discussed in a previous issue of The Means Report. Metal roofing, in particular, is available in a large variety of textures, colors and shapes. The architect, engineer or homeowner can pick from this large variety based upon requirements, aesthetics and budget.

In different parts of the country, architectural styles of residential homes and commercial structures demand products that are pleasing to the eye. For example, in New England, where colonial style homes are predominant, a roof that resembles clay tiles may seem out of place. Metal roofing solves this issue by being so versatile. Profiles that resemble asphalt shingles, tile, slate, wood shakes or shingles, and any other roofing product are available.

In addition to being versatile, metal roofing is also a tough, durable material. Resistant to damage by fire, snow, hail and hurricane conditions, metal roofing can surpass many of the most stringent building codes in the U.S. Its relatively light weight also makes metal roofing attractive from the standpoint of requiring less structural support than asphalt shingles, tiles and slate.

Available in steel, aluminum and even copper, metal roofing also provides the designer with choices in color. Tough painted finishes that last generations, or natural aging that can produce a desirable patina provide metal roofing with additional advantages.

According to the 2008 version of RSMeans’ Building Construction Cost Data, metal roofing prices run from a low of under $3.00 per square foot to over $10.00 per square foot. While somewhat more expensive than asphalt shingles, metal roofing can provide a competitive life cycle cost when compared over an extended period of time. A life span of two to three times that of asphalt shingles, metal roofing also provides the benefit of less material in landfills because it not only lasts longer, but is also recyclable.
