Previous articles have discussed window style, application and design attributes. Frame type has been discussed along with fixed and movable sash. This discussion will be on the installation practices.

Pairing Opening with Window
After the window is designed and purchased for the specific application, the rough opening will have been determined by the window chosen. This allows the window an opening in the structure to slide into yet will allow a structural attachment and assist in keeping the structure water and thermally tight.

Flashing
The window should be properly flashed, to assist in keeping water out should there be penetration at the building skin or along a seam. The flashing should be along all four edges of the window and may be further assisted by additional material working with the building skin as per the design team or manufacturers recommendation. In addition the flashing may be surface mounted or embedded.

Sealant
To finish the installation the proper sealant should be applied, along any seam. The surfaces where the sealant is to be applied should be clean and free from any loose material. In addition the proper type — and the proper width and depth — are required for proper sealant application.
