Project Description

proposed construction of the Bridgepoint Health Campus of Care. The project involves construction of an environmentally friendly hospital to serve patients requiring rehabilitation services and those living with complex chronic disease and disability. The new hospital will be 580,000 sq ft, 10 storeys, capacity for 472 beds; will feature a new clinic; showers and expanded staff changerooms. The building's environmental features will also include less consumption of energy; 20 percent use of potable water; use storm-water runoff from the roof for landscape irrigation; support of alternative transportation by providing preferred parking for carpools and bikeracks,; and maximum use of natural light. The project will be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) with a Silver rating. The project will also include alterations to the historic buildings on the Don Jail site. The buildings will be preserved and repurposed for construction of amenity spaces, including 55,000 sq ft for administrative space and an education/research centre for the new hospital. The main entrance will be publicly accessible, the Rotunda will be restored and some cells and the galls will be preserved for historical purposes. The day room, and the governor's tea room and the library will be restored for use as meeting rooms and public reception areas. Restoration projects will include restoration of the heritage exteriors, gutting the prison wings to remove the walls that divide cells, and make the interiors more pleasant. Pending completion of demolition, interior alterations will include construction of new load-bearing walls, restoration of HVAC and plumbing systems, and new floors.
