What is the difference between the embankment cubic yards (ECY) and loose cubic yards (LCY) designation? Please explain both.
Steve Barnoski

Answer:

Embankment cubic yards (ECY) is the volume measurement of the soil when it exists in situ.  Situ means how it exists in its natural state and position.

Loose cubic yards (LCY) is the volume of the soil once it has been excavated.  Much like sifting flour, when soil is excavated, it swells to a loose condition.
