Can you believe that RSMeans has been publishing construction cost data for 70 years?

Robert Snow Means, a practicing engineer, first collected cost data for his own use and later supplied cost information to friends and colleagues.

In 1940 he founded the Robert S. Means company and in 1942 published his first cost book, Building Construction Cost Data - meant to provide engineers with average unit prices for a wide variety of building construction items used in engineering estimates.

In the years following World War II, rapid changes in the construction industry fueled a dramatic increase in the use of Building Construction Cost Data throughout the country.

By 1960, the growing company needed a larger space and so moved its office to Snug Harbor in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Robert Snow Means, the original founder, passed away shortly thereafter in August of 1961.

During the 1970's, the company expanded its product line to cover a variety of cost areas, and in 1978 it began to offer building construction cost estimating seminars as well, which are still offered today.

In 1979, the company moved into its newly completed headquarters in Kingston, Massachusetts and in 1980 RSMeans publishes its first reference books like the RSMeans Estimating Handbook and the RSMeans Illustrated Construction Dictionary.

In 1992, BCCD celebrated its 50th anniversary. RSMeans expanded its offerings to include the Business Solutions group, offering consulting expertise in cost engineering, research and database management.

With the advent of the digital age, RSMeans begins offering its Construction Cost Data in digital and CD-ROM formats.

In 2007, RSMeans launched Means, its online, customizable cost database.

That same year, RSMeans began offering BCCD for limited time in Spanish.

In 2011, the RSMeans team moved into a new headquarters building in Norwell, Massachusetts and began publishing its Green Building Cost Data.

Today, BCCD tracks over 23,000 cost line items and includes detailed cost data for commercial construction - both new construction and renovation work, as well as materials, equipment and labor costs for green construction and industry-specific mechanical, electrical and plumbing data.

And that company founded by Robert Snow Means has become North America's leading supplier of construction cost information. RSMeans provides accurate and up-to-date cost information that helps owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors and others to carefully and precisely project and control the cost of both new building construction and renovation projects. In addition to its collection of annual construction cost data books, RSMeans offers construction estimating and facilities management seminars, electronic cost databases and software, reference books, and consulting services.
