This seminar is separated into seven topics. It is presented through the eyes of the general contractor’s project management team. Whether an attendees practice is commercial or residential is irrelevant. The practical skills are identical and the application very similar. All parties to the construction process can benefit from knowing what should be expected of the professional project manager.

Taught by the estimating and engineering experts of RSMeans, Practical Project Management for Construction Professionals is designed to improve the skills and effectiveness of professional project managers, and help those who work with them to better understand the role. It’s particularly suited to Project Managers, Architects, Engineers, Owner’s Representatives, Contractors and anyone who’s responsible for managing construction in today’s complex business environment.

Here’s just a sample of what you’ll learn. . .

  • Project management, an overview: It’s a look at the project manager’s role and goals in the building process
  • Contract review: You’ve got to understand the written contract -- and its implications if you’re going to administer it correctly!
  • Key characteristics of various construction contracts -- including stipulated sum, design/build cost plus fee. . .and more
  • Negotiating with subcontractors and vendors: Cost, completion dates, scheduling -- you name it
  • Communication, including some critical writing skills you may have forgotten since ninth grade
  • Cost control procedures -- from integrated cost and schedule control, to forecasting and trends
  • Insurance, bonds and risk allocation. It’s all about managing risk -- who assumes it, how much it costs, and why
  • Dispute resolution, claims and liens -- including negotiations techniques that can lead to satisfactory resolutions, what arbitration can and cannot do, and some tips for preparing for litigaton.
  • Project Delivery and closeout. The project’s not done until it’s100% done: releases, waivers, liens, training and final paperwork
