To those who think ceiling means only a flat, white surface somewhere above the head, think again. Ceilings today are available in a variety of shapes, materials, styles and colors, and are often stunning architectural elements in their own right. Technically, a ceiling is "(1) the overhead inside lining or finish of a room or area" or "(2) any overhanging surface viewed from below." (Means Illustrated Construction Dictionary, p. 110, 2003.) However, there are many different types of ceilings created to meet a variety of design and functional requirements. These include acoustical ceilings, suspended ceilings, decorative panel ceilings, textured ceilings and specialty ceilings, among others.
