The Wild Card

Learn how to get the most from Reed Construction Data products & services

When you are searching for Projects by their Title, try using the Wild Card. The wild card is the percent sign (%). The percent sign should immediately precede the keyword, term or phrase for which you are searching.

Let’s say you wanted to search for all the projects with “Marriott” in the titles that have been updated since January 2005. From the Search Projects screen,

  1. Type in %marriott in the Project Title field
  2. Enter 01/01/2005 in the Update Date Min field
  3. Click on Search

Using a percent sign before “Marriott” means the word can appear anywhere in the title. As you can see from the following search results (see below), this feature pulls all Marriott projects, even though Marriott is not the first word in the Project Title.

NOTE: You do NOT have to put a % AFTER the word, only at the beginning.

When you have heard of a Project that we do not seem to have, using the % sign in the Title field is really very helpful because we will often have the Project listed under a different name.

Say for example you have heard of a Project you know as “Alabama State University Fine Arts Building”. We have this Project named “Al St University College of Fine Arts”. A good search to run would be to select Alabama from the State field, then in the Title field put %fine or %art or %university. Any one of these Title search words will bring up the project you are looking for.

The key to using the % sign in your Title Search field is to use words in the Title as you know it and not to rely on just one word. For example, if in the above noted search example you put %alabama, you would not come up with the Project as we have it named. You would not want to use %al because that would bring up anything that has the letters “al” in the Title and your resulting List View would contain too many Projects that were not relevant. So it is better to use the words as shown above (%fine, %art or %university).

Another thing to remember is to keep your string of letters after the % sign to a minimum. For example, say the Project you know of includes the word “Bio-Medical”. The best way to search for this would be to put %bio or %medical — we may have the word as “Biomedical” in the Project title. If you have %bio-medical you would miss the Project as we have it named.
